How to Bend Copper Pipe with a Hand Bender:
1. Prepare the Pipe and Bender
Clean and deburr: Clean the end of the pipe of any rough edges from the cutting process.
Mark the bend point: Use a permanent marker to mark the desired bend location on the outside of the pipe. You can use a piece of scrap pipe to help find the correct spot for the outside edge.
Align the pipe: Place the pipe into the bender, ensuring the mark you made is aligned with the bender's guide mark (which represents the centre of the bend).
Secure the pipe: Close the stop or other locking mechanism on the bender to hold the pipe firmly in place.
2. Make the Bend
Apply steady pressure: Bend the pipe using the bender's handles. Apply steady, consistent pressure to create a smooth bend.
Watch the angle: Use the bender's calibration to ensure you are bending to the correct angle. Many benders bend slightly past the target angle, so be prepared to adjust for springback.
Account for springback: Bend the pipe a little further than the final required angle, as the pipe will spring back slightly when the pressure is released.
3. Finish and Adjust
Release the pressure: Gently release the pressure from the bender.
Check the angle. If it's not perfect, you can use the bender to make minor adjustments to reach the exact angle required.
Make a second bend (if needed): If you need to make a second bend, measure the distance between the centre of the first bend and the desired location of the second bend and repeat the process. You can use an offcut to ensure the second bend is accurate.
Applications:
- Refrigeration line bending
- A/C system installations
- Plumbing installations
- Copper tubing routing
- HVAC installations
- Professional service work
- Workshop use
- Custom tube fabrication
Benefits:
Lever-type tube bender creates smooth, professional short radius bends in 1/2" O.D. copper tubing without kinking or flattening - essential for maintaining proper flow and system performance. The open-side design allows it to slip over the tube at any point, making it ideal for working with pre-installed tubing where bends need to be created without disconnecting the tube. Makes smooth bends with minimum effort thanks to the lever mechanism. A calibrated scale displays the angle of bend for precise tube routing and professional installations. Bends up to 180° for maximum flexibility in tube routing applications. Radius to centre of tube is 1 1/2", providing a short radius bend that's ideal for tight spaces. Durable construction withstands demanding professional use and ensures long service life. Perfect for HVAC/R technicians installing refrigeration lines, plumbers routing copper piping, and experienced installers who require precise tube bending capabilities. The 1/2" O.D. (3/8" nominal) size is commonly used in larger refrigeration systems and plumbing applications. Professional-grade quality delivers consistent results job after job. Essential tool for any technician who regularly works with 1/2" copper tubing and needs to create accurate bends.
